Visiting Dubrovnik by cruise ship?
There are three options – stops for cruise ships visiting Dubrovnik
- cruise ship can be anchored in water just beside an Old Dubrovnik City (next to green island of Lokrum)
and tender boat will take you directly to Old Dubrovnik City harbour. - Ships can be docked in main Dubrovnik Port of Gruz, and you’ll have shuttle bus organized or you’ll
take a taxi if you wanna see Old City of Dubrovnik. Depending on a trafic, drive untill Pile Gate – main
bus stop for touristic buses will last from 10-30 minutes. - Rarely, if all docks are busy, you ship may be anchored in waters next to Dubrovnik port, close to
Daksa island, and tender boats will take you to the port, to pass the customs check and get to your
shuttle/excursion bus going to Old City of Dubrovnik.
Shore excursions in Dubrovnik
The best selling shore excursions on board and most suitable for short stay visitors are those including guided sightseeing of the
Old City and prices vary from 30-60 Euros per person, depending on the duration of the walk (museums visited) and if there is a 15-minute
Panoramic drive or/and drink refreshment included in the tour.
I can offer you a private Walking Tour of the city starting already from 49.- € for a whole group from 1-10 people. All you need to do is
book in advance and get to our meeting point which is easily reachable by taxi or ship’s shuttle bus. Meeting point locations are described
below tour booking forms here.
Having your own private tour guide instead of walking with a group of 45 people and paying more than 50% less (including money for
the taxi or shuttle bus drive to the meeting point) compared to the price for a similar excursion organized by the cruising company is a great chance.
I find these Walking tours most suitable for Cruise ship visitors:

Dubrovnik port
- History
Port of Dubrovnik or Gruz port, named by bay of Gruz, is located in North-Western part of Dubrovnik,
starting from mouth of river Ombla (flowing under bridge of Franjo Tudjman), finishing at the end of the bay.
In medieval time Gruz area was an outskirt of Dubrovnik where main shipyard of Dubrovnik Republic was
located but it was also a perfect place where Dubrovnik noble families have built a Renaissance summer
houses. In 1901 Austro-Hungarian authorities finished the construction of narrow gauge railway which gave
an impetus to strong development of Gruz as trading port – an economic branch which lasted all until 1991,
when Port was demolished and burnt by Serb and Montenegrian army, in Croatian War for Independence.
As port is fully reconstructed and transferred into passengers port, war traces can hardly be found.
- Today
Today Dubrovnik port of call is among the best rated in the Mediterranean by cruise ship passengers because
everyone is fascinated with the preserved medieval Old City of Dubrovnik, its clean winding streets, small squares
and its well built City Walls encircling the whole city. Port itself is well organised, clean and not just port neighbouring
area of Gruz but the whole Dubrovnik is safe city and majority of people will provide you help on English.
